It’s a sunny Saturday here on the banks of Boston’s Charles River. A great setting for this weekend’s Power of Narrative conference at Boston University. (Pure coincidence: this year, the conference is held at BU’s School of Management, whose latest alumni magazine we helped build.) Since 1998, the conference, cosponsored by BU and the Poynter Institute, has been pulling together some of the country’s top writers and editors to examine the craft of narrative journalism.
This year’s keynote speakers this year – Kelly McEvers, Mitch Zuckoff, and Dick Lehr – got our creative gears turning. From stories on digging through glaciers in Greenland for WWII bombers to tales on reporting about infamous criminal Whitey Bulger’s prison LSD experiments, the speakers illustrated how distilling facts into a sprawling narrative is crucial to our artform.
